When a group of players gathered for an optional club skills and 3v3 session on Friday, February 19, it was the first time in months that cold Arctic air didn’t govern training. The slowly warming weather signals the beginning of the spring season, and players and teams are emerging from various indoor soccer facilities and gymnasiums to begin consistent outdoor training. Credit many of the older teams for braving freezing temperatures in January and February, but now that the snow and ice have melted, younger teams can finally join them outside.
“Although we encourage all teams to train outdoors, it isn’t always productive to take the youngest of our players out in freezing temperatures,” says Crush Academy Director Darrick Lubell, “Our players need to learn how to deal with the elements, but there is a right time and age to implement each specific training philosophy.”
Now that the weather seems to be friendlier, look for teams to begin tournament play soon. Many of the club’s top boys team will head to Birmingham on March 6-7 for the prestigious Vulcan Cup, while the girls teams will play in the same tournament the following weekend.
“The Vulcan Cup is a great tournament,” says Filip Leander, one of KnoxCrush’s directors, “The fields are great, the competition is strong, and the tournament does a good job accommodating coaches bringing multiple teams.”
Many of the teams not playing in the Vulcan Cup will be playing in the White House Spring Classic on March 13-14. The White House tournament endeared itself to the club last season after playing tournament games despite heavy rain the week prior. While other tournaments in the state closed their facilities and canceled their tournaments, the tiny club outside of Nashville sacrificed their fields and played the games.
Also, KnoxCrush is hosting the KnoxCrush Soccer Classic on March 20-21. The tournament will be played at several different locations throughout the Knoxville area. So far, the field appears to be one of the deepest in years, as teams are coming from multiple states to compete.
